DESCRIPTION:RSVP FOR THIS EVENT HERE \nHosted and curated by Drae Campbell\, join us at The Bureau for an evening of queer storytelling. This month’s theme is “Constants”. Joined by comic Calvin Cato\, artist and prison abolitionist Léoh Hailu-Ghermay\, and theatre artist Gagarin\, come hear the chaos and the comedy that unites us in our queerness. We’ve all got those stories. Let’s tell them.  \n* \nNamed one of Time Out New York’s LGBTQ Comics of Color to Watch Out For\, Calvin S. Cato has dazzled audiences around the world. His on-air and radio appearances include Oxygen\, Netflix\, Sirius XM\, RISK!\, WIRED Magazine\, and an unaired pilot for Vice Media called Emergency Black Meeting. His comedy has been featured in numerous festivals and events including San Francisco Sketchfest\, Edinburgh Fringe Festival\, Gotham Storytelling Festival\, Brooklyn Pride\, and FlameCon. In early 2021\, Calvin was published in Kweendom\, an anthology of essays by queer comedians and entertainers. In 2022\, Calvin concluded a 3 month run hosting a daily talk show on RushTix. Be sure to catch Calvin’s latest comedy album Disney Single\, releasing in September 2026! \nLéoh Hailu-Ghermay is a Black\, Tigrayan\, first generation American\, queer artist\, prison abolitionist and reluctant/begrudging/suffering law student. They are talking\, laughing\, loving\, breathing\, fighting\, fucking\, etc. on occupied Canarsie and Munsee-Lenapehoking. They believe that storytelling is the catalyst for literally anything remotely good ever happening and doing it strengthens the fight for liberation of all oppressed people everywhere.  \nGagarin (they/them) is a theatre artist whose work lives at the intersection of dance\, clown & kink. They seek to create art that brings audiences & artist to a primal place from which we can reencounter ourselves and our world. Previous credits include: Who’s Your Daddy (Brick AUX)\, The World’s Tiniest Twink (BAH)\, Body Unredacted (Blessed Unrest)\, Tango Palace (Theatre MITU). \nDrae Campbell (she/they) is an actor\, comedian and storyteller who has performed in every medium. Drae was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award for her work in The Nosebleed at Lincoln Center Theater. Drae’s first performance was at age 5 in a nightclub as the opening act for a punk band. Her career in theater and in gender joy started when she was cast as John Henry in The Member Of The Wedding in a local San Francisco production at age 9. Drae has a BFA in Theater from The University of the Arts. Drae has been hosting and curating a queer storytelling show for 12 years called TELL\, which has been made into a SILVER Signal Award winning podcast. @draebiz @tellqueerz \nThe Bureau of General Services—Queer Division is Manhattan’s last queer bookstore\, located on the second floor of the LGBT Center. DESCRIPTION:Join Susan Stryker and Jack Halberstam at the Bureau for the launch of Susan’s provocative\, genre-bending new book\, CHANGING GENDER. \nRSVP TO THIS EVENT \n\n\n\n\nThat gender is a hotly contested topic becomes ever clearer as antigender ideology continues to be mobilized by the far right and transgender people’s lives are increasingly targeted. But what are we talking about when we talk about gender? Where did the concept itself come from\, and where might it go? \nIn Changing Gender\, the leading trans scholar Susan Stryker invites readers to ride along on her lifelong quest to uncover what gender means and does. She traces the gender concept’s roots in grammar and tells the story of how it transformed into a battleground of the culture wars. From the origins of “Yankee Doodle” to acid trips in Joshua Tree National Park\, from nineteenth-century phrenology to present-day anti-trans conspiracy theorists\, Stryker finds surprising places to tune in to the origins\, idiosyncrasies\, and generative possibilities of the gender concept. Along the way\, she weaves stories drawn from her lifetime as a pathbreaking historian\, filmmaker\, activist\, and founding figure of transgender studies. \nPoignant and deeply researched\, lyrical and authoritative\, Changing Gender is a book for our fraught time\, exposing limiting assumptions about gender across the political spectrum and imagining what life might look like if some of those limitations were lifted. Ultimately\, Stryker argues\, to change gender is to change what it means to be human—and to change reality itself. \nAfter the event there will be time for Susan (and Jack) to sign copies of their respective books\, which will be available for purchase at the Bureau. \n*** \nSusan Stryker’s historical research\, theoretical writings\, media-making\, activism\, and academic field-building activities have helped shape the conversation on trans issues since the early 1990s. Stryker retired from the University of Arizona in 2020 and currently holds a distinguished visiting appointment at Stanford University’s Michelle Clayman Institute for Gender Research. She is the author of many academic and general audience works\, including Transgender History. She lives in San Francisco. \nJack Halberstam is the David Feinson Professor of The Humanities at Columbia University. Halberstam is the author of seven books including: Female Masculinity (Duke UP\, 1998)\, The Queer Art of Failure (Duke UP\, 2011)\, and\, a short book titled Trans*: A Quick and Quirky Account of Gender Variance (University of California Press) among others. Halberstam’s new book is Anarchitecture After Everything: A Trans Manifesto\, which will be published by MIT Press in August 2026. Halberstam was recently the subject of a short film titled “So We Moved” by Adam Pendleton. Halberstam was recently named a 2024 Guggenheim Fellow.
