DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion on the value of Black Queer Placemaking in shaping belonging and community in an era of shifting gay geographies. \nRSVP HERE \n\n\n\n\nJoin Terrell J. A. Winder (Shameless: The Making of Black Gay Identities in LA) and Theo Greene (Not in My Gayborhood: Gay Neighborhoods and the Rise of the Vicarious Citizen) for a conversation on Blackness\, Queerness\, visibility\, and their intersections. \n— \nTerrell J. A. Winder received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California\, Los Angeles in 2017. An urban ethnographer\, Dr. Winder’s research areas include race & ethnicity\, sexuality & sexual health\, qualitative & quantitative research methods\, and education. His current research examines stigma response processes among stigmatized populations negotiating more than one stigma simultaneously. His research has been published in Qualitative Sociology\, AIDS Patient Care & STDs\, the Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities\, and the Journal of Medical Internet Research. His work on mobile applications as a health intervention has also been covered in the Los Angeles Times. His book\, Shameless: The Making of Black Gay Identities in LA\, is a multi-method examination of anti-gay stigma response among young Black gay men in Los Angeles. \nTheo Greene is an Associate Professor and Chair in the Department of Sociology at Bowdoin College. His research and teaching interests focus on the intersection of sexuality\, urbanism\, and culture. Greene’s research broadly explores how sexual communities help us understand how urban redevelopment shapes and redefines how individuals think about\, identify with\, and participate in local communities. His book\, Not in MY Gayborhood! Gay Neighborhoods and the Rise of the Vicarious Citizen recently received the 2026 Outstanding Book Award in Community and Urban Sociology from the American Sociological Association. In addition to his ongoing work on gay neighborhoods and queer placemaking in Maine\, Theo is currently Chair-Elect of the Community and Urban Sociology Section of the American Sociological Association and serves on several boards that support LGBTQ communities in Portland\, Maine\, including the Frannie Peabody Center and the Equality Community Center.

SUMMARY:Summer Sweat Series: Queer Erotica Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:BGSQD and Hive Mind Books invite writers of all levels and backgrounds to join author Christian Pan in a Queer Erotica Writing Workshop! \nREGISTER FOR THIS EVENT \n\n\n\n\nDo you have fantasies\, desires\, an over-active imagination? Have you ever wanted to put some of that into a short story? Do you like reading erotica\, and ever thought\, “Yeah\, I could do that!” Do you feel like your particular kind of YUM is not showing up in the LGBTQIA+ lit out there? \nThen grab pen & paper (or a laptop)\, come to the Bureau\, and let´s sweat it out onto the page. \nOver the course of 5 in-person sessions\, this workshop will provide prompts\, tools\, readings\, and discussion of how each of us can bring our erotic story to life. We´ll talk character\, dialogue\, place\, and ways to activate the senses. We´ll read excerpts from other people´s work\, and welcome you to submit excerpts to be workshopped by the class. We will try to get you as close as possible to finishing a draft of that story by the end of the workshop. \nParticipants will also be invited to read an excerpt from their work to invited guests at the Bureau during a special event in September. \nSound like fun? Cost is only $15 per session\, or $50 for all 5 if you pay in advance. Why not?! As its subtitle suggests\, Drew Pisarra’s latest hybrid is serving up All Hallow’s Eve a bit early. The book’s first half\, Price in Purgatory\, is an imaginative radio play about the titular actor’s Dantesque journey from Hell to Heaven. (“…hysterically funny and intensely thought-provoking…” — Arts Independent) The second part\, Price in Celluloid\, chronicles Pisarra’s decidedly personal exploration of Price’s extensive filmography\, including some hard-to-find made-for-TV gems\, as if Price were the whole point. (“joyously obsessive” — Maitland McDonagh). Special guests will make this a book launch you won’t forget! \nAfter the launch there will be time for Drew to sign copies of Diabolically Good\, which will be available for purchase at the Bureau! \n*** \nDrew Pisarra is the author of three poetry collections (Fassbinder: His Movies\, My Poems\, Periodic Boyfriends\, and Infinity Standing Up); two short story collections (You’re Pretty Gay and Publick Spanking); and two radio plays (The Strange Case of Nick M. and Price in Purgatory). A grantee of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council\, Curious Elixirs: Curious Creators\, and Café Royal Cultural Foundation\, he is also a playwright whose works for the stage have included Tea Towels at Theater for the New City and Click at The Tank NYC as well as My Bedroom Is an Installation and Voiceover\, two experimental pieces co-written with Jerry Mouawad for Imago Theatre in Portland\, Oregon.

Yaffa is an author\, organizer\, and culture worker. Yaffa’s poetry\, non-fiction\, and fiction books have been sold globally and translated to various languages. Yaffa is the author of the poetry collections: blood orange\, desecrated poppies\, sage\, and thistle\, the non-fiction essay collections: whispers beneath the orange grove\, living to 99\, letters from a living utopia\, and be better broken: in service to liberation\, and the editor of the anthology: Inara. Yaffa is the inaugural Executive Director of the Muslim Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity and manages various other organizations and networks to support the most marginalized of the most marginalized. Yaffa’s service to liberation spans continents. They dream of living in a liberated Falasteen soon. \nRanda Jarrar is the author of the memoir Love Is An Ex-Country\, the novel A Map of Home\, and the collection of stories Him\, Me\, Muhammad Ali. She is a filmmaker and actor who has appeared in independent films and on the A24 TV shows Ramy and #1 Happy Family USA. She is a recipient of a Creative Capital Award\, an American Book Award\, and others. She lives in Los Angeles.
