In 1964\, Jenkins was arrested for soliciting sex in a YMCA bathroom near the White House. The scandal blasted across the front pages of major US newspapers\, becoming a watershed in making straight America aware of queer life. Stewart-Winter is joined by Hugh Ryan\, historian and co-host of the Queer History 101 podcast\, for a conversation about the conditions of queer folks during the “Walter Jenkins affair” and its political and cultural aftershocks. \nCopies of Outed will be available for purchase. Both authors will be available after the event for a signing.  \nTimothy Stewart-Winter is a historian of sexuality\, gender\, and politics in modern America. His research examines LGBTQ activism and public policy\, electoral and presidential politics\, and the shifting public meanings of private life. He is the author of Outed: LBJ’s Confidant and the Arrest That Transformed a Presidency and Queer Clout: Chicago and the Rise of Gay Politics. His writing has appeared in publications including The New York Times\, the Los Angeles Times\, The Washington Post\, Slate\, and leading historical journals. \nHugh Ryan is a writer\, historian\, and curator in New York City. With the multi-talented Peppermint\, he is also the host of Queer History 101\, the bookclub & podcast from Allstora.com. His most recent book\, THE WOMEN’S HOUSE OF DETENTION: A Queer History of a Forgotten Prison\, is a queer history of the Women’s House of Detention in Greenwich Village. It is the story of one building: the people it caged\, the neighborhood it changed\, and the resistance it inspired. Spanning the sexual liberation of the 70s and the AIDS epidemic of the 80s\, Brooks Kolb’s Landscape in Lavender traces one man’s journey towards self-discovery and the loves that bloom in the light of self-acceptance. In conversation with Michael Bosnick\, join Brooks Kolb for the NYC launch of his debut book.  \nBrooks Kolb was educated at the American College in Paris\, University College London\, and the University of Pennsylvania. At Penn he trained in landscape architecture under Ian McHarg\, famed author of Design With Nature\, and with Laurie Olin\, subject of the 2024 documentary Sitting Still. After coming out of the closet\, he moved to San Francisco\, where he witnessed two key periods of gay history: the post-Stonewall era of sexual liberation and the tragic AIDS epoch. The principal of Brooks Kolb LLC Landscape Architecture\, Brooks’s practice is devoted to residential garden design. A long-term park preservation advocate and founding member of Seattle’s Volunteer Park Trust\, he currently serves on the boards of Allied Arts of Seattleand the Allied Arts Foundation. An avid swimmer\, Brooks lives in Seattle with his husband\, Dennis\, and their miniature schnauzer\, Stella. \nMichael Bosnick is a recently retired New York City government Deputy Commissioner\, with additional stints in magazine publishing (marketing) and non-profit youth services programming.  His government career consisted of three phases: child welfare\, affordable housing\, and aging services.  \nThe Bureau of General Services—Queer Division is Manhattan’s only queer bookstore\, located on the second floor of the LGBT Center. Using examples from television\, film\, music\, sports\, and politics—including the cultural impact of late-2025 breakout series Heated Rivalry—Stulberg shows how today’s progress was built on decades of creative risk-taking and activism. \nDrawing on 14 years of interviews with 170 culture workers\, including Eric McCormack\, Lea DeLaria\, and Greg Louganis\, the book reveals six key strategies used to advance LGBTQ+ social change—from becoming visible to “staying queer.” Rich with behind-the-scenes insight\, How to Win a Culture War offers a timely playbook for changing hearts\, minds\, and culture in the face of ongoing political backlash. \nCopies of the book will be available for purchase and there will be time for a signing after the event.  \nLisa M. Stulberg is associate professor of sociology of education at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture\, Education\, and Human Development and an affiliated faculty member in the Department of Sociology at NYU. Her research focuses on the politics of race and education\, affirmative action in higher education\, school choice policy and politics\, and LGBTQ+ social change. She is the author of a forthcoming book on the connection between pop culture and LGBTQ+ social change\, entitled How to Win a Culture War: LGBTQ+ Social Change Through Pop Culture\, to be published by the University of Chicago Press in October of 2026. She is also the author of Race\, Schools\, and Hope: African Americans and School Choice after Brown (Teachers College Press\, 2008) and LGBTQ Social Movements (Polity\, 2018).  \nBrian Sims is a civil rights attorney and LGBTQ+ advocate who spent a decade in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as the first openly LGBTQ+ person elected to the state’s General Assembly. Before his time in state office\, he was co-captain of the Bloomsburg University football team\, becoming the first openly gay college football captain on record. He currently serves as a Lecturer in Culture\, Advocacy and Leadership at Vanderbilt University New York City.
