DESCRIPTION:Co-founded by lesbian book lovers Judi Komaki and Piper Olsen\, the Lesbian Book Club reads fiction and non-fiction — classic\, contemporary\, revealing and visionary. As a group we will decide what to read each month\, focusing on lesbian authors and/or related topics. \nFor our October 10th meeting\, we’ll read Mary Oliver’s collection\, Little Alleluias: Collected Poetry and Prose. Registration is not required. \nThe Bureau of General Services—Queer Division is Manhattan’s only queer bookstore\, located on the second floor of the LGBT Center. We’re open Tuesday-Sunday from 1-7pm. Our cafe\, The Bureau Café\, is open Tuesday-Sunday from 9am-7pm.

DESCRIPTION:RSVP TO THIS EVENT HERE \nJoin us for a book talk with John D’Emilio discussing his latest book\, Making Gay History: Memoir of a Scholar-Activist. In it\, he recounts his career as a public historian\, activist\, and academic\, relating his own queer history alongside the development of the LGBTQ movement in the United States. \n \nJohn D’Emilio was part of the first burgeoning period of LGBTQ studies while still a graduate student in New York City. He takes readers through his experiences as an out professor at UNC Greensboro\, his activism in Washington\, DC\, and finally\, his employment at the University of Illinois as an LGBTQ historian\, a position that was unimaginable at the start of his career. At the same time\, he narrates his own coming out\, his successes and struggles with LGBTQ advocacy\, and the loves and losses faced throughout his adult life\, telling an intertwined personal and national history of queer hearts and minds. \nCopies of Making Gay History: Memoir of a Scholar-Activist will be available for purchase after the event. John D’Emilio will be available for a signing.  \nThe Bureau of General Services—Queer Division is Manhattan’s only queer bookstore\, located on the second floor of the LGBT Center.
